Seventeen Photographs Taken by a CCC’er, Likely at Camp Elgin, Oregon.

Oregon and Wyoming: c. 1939–1941. Seventeen photographs measuring 3 x 4 ¾ inches. Excellent. Item #Cat323

A collection of photographs taken by a CCC’er, mainly appearing to be in Oregon with at least one taken in Green River, Wyoming. The camp to which the photographer belonged is not identified; however, in one photograph a man gives a thumbs up in front of a sign on Oregon Route 204 which reads “ELGIN 1”, with a manuscript caption verso stating that the photograph was taken “1 mile from Camp.” The caption continues, “Langdon Lake is where we work 5 miles from the lake in the woods.” Camp Elgin was in service between October 1939 and August 1941, with its enrollees mainly working on forest management projects—in two photographs in this collection, men pose with saws, axes, and cut lumber.

Most of the photographs document camp life rather than work: interior and exterior shots of the barracks and grounds, with men washing up, leaning out of doorways, lounging on cots in the yard, and posing in matching long underwear (in an interesting double-exposure shot). These appear to be from the same location, again likely Elgin. One photograph shows a dusty road with storefronts and is captioned on the verso “Somewhere near Green River Wyoming”; there was a CCC camp in Green River, though it is unclear whether the photographer was affiliated with it.
