New York: Brown Brothers, 1927. First Edition. Silver gelatin photographs measuring 8 ½ x 6 ¾. Slight fading to one image, various editorial marks to versos, very good condition overall. Very Good. Item #List1015
A pair of press photographs of Sacco and Vanzetti, printed in 1927 but likely taken several years earlier while they were in custody during their trial. Despite widespread advocacy and protests, the pair were executed in 1927 following the decision of the three-man commission to uphold the verdict, after they were appointed by Governor Alvin Fuller to investigate the case. These photographs were taken by the Brown Brothers firm outside the Superior Courthouse in Dedham in 1921, and are reproduced here and dated 1927 likely to coincide with coverage of the commission deliberations and their execution. The image in which Sacco looks at the camera directly is particularly iconic.
