An uncommon work by the Scottish abolitionist James Massie, who visited the United States several times during the Civil War, recording his observations from a 1863 visit here. He was the author of another work on the Civil War, The American Crisis, in relation to the Anti-Slavery Cause, published in 1862. The map presents the territorial claims of both the Union and Confederacy, and has an unusual depiction of the West, with Dakota shown as extending all the way to Washington Territory. Uncommon in the trade, with two copies appearing at auction in the previous twenty years. Howes M384, Stephenson 48.
