Press Photograph of Shirley Chisholm and John Conyers During the Supreme Court Nomination of Clement Haynsworth.

Washington, D.C. United Press International, September 1969. Single photograph measuring 7 x 9 inches with typed caption photographed. United Press International stamp verso. Fine. Item #List3103

A press photograph of Representatives John Conyers and Shirley Chisholm with a caption describing their opposition to Nixon’s nomination for US Supreme Court of Clement Haynsworth. The caption reads, in part:

“Eight Negroes serving in Congress said 9/25 that Judge Clement F. Haynsworth’s record on civil rights demonstrated his ‘infidelity to the principles of racial equality which are contained in the constitution.’ [Conyers and Chisholm…] are two of the black legislators who went before the Senate Judiciary Committee 9/25 to oppose the Haynsworth nomination.”

Haynsworth was unpopular with Civil Rights advocates primarily for his affirmation of a decision to close, rather than integrate, schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was also unpopular with labor, especially for a decision overturning a NLRB ruling against closing a South Carolina textile mill after its workers unionized. Though the Judiciary Committee recommended his nomination to the Senate, it was defeated by a 45-55 vote. Conyers and Chisholm were both pioneering African American politicians and Civil Rights proponents; Chisholm was the first Black woman to serve in Congress.
