Studio portrait of an African American woman, taken by African American photographer Walter Baker (1876/8–1926) in New York City. The stamp verso reads “Walter Baker's Studio / 463 LENOX AVENUE / NEW YORK”, which dates the photograph to between 1915 and 1920. Baker was born in Kentucky and was in New York by 1910; he appears on the census that year listed as “Mulatto,” along with his wife Hazel Welch of Wisconsin, listed as “Indian”.
