Portrait of a Mixed-Race Kansan Family, c. 1885–1890.

Jewell City, Kansas: Dunham & Stidham, c. 1885–1890. Cabinet card measuring 6 ½ x 4 ¼ inches. Pencil verso reads “Dora”. Some foxing to mount; photo with excellent contrast. Excellent to Near Fine. Item #List3430

A family portrait appearing to show a mixed-race couple and their children, taken by Dunham & Stidham in Jewell City, Kansas. Newspaper records indicate that Dunham & Stidham were active in Jewell City (now Jewell) between 1885 and 1890. Interestingly, despite Kansas’ fraught racial history, it was early to get rid of anti-miscegenation laws, repealing its law—which forbade marriage only between white and Black people—in 1859, prior to statehood.
