A collection of photographs showing the funeral procession of Robert Holmes, who died exchanging fire with a burglar in New York City in 1917. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Holmes was the first African American to die in the line of duty in the city, and was one of two officers who died in 1917.[1] The funeral was attended by a large police escort, shown in these pictures, and the police commissioner.
