Jno. Lange and Jno. W. “Blind” Boone.
Likely Kansas City: 1914. Trade card with photographic half tone illustration, 8 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Fine. Item #List3621
An unusually large and visually direct promotional trade card pairing impresario John B. Lange with ragtime virtuoso John William “Blind” Boone (1864–1927), a foundational yet still underrecognized figure in American popular music. Boone’s biography reflects the complex pathways of post–Civil War Black mobility: born to Rachel Boone, an emancipated woman who escaped slavery while working as a cook for the Union Army’s 7th Missouri Militia, he lost his sight following early childhood illness but developed remarkable musical abilities nurtured through training at the Missouri School for the Blind. His later career would position him among the most widely traveled Black concert pianists of his generation.
Boone’s partnership with Lange proved decisive. Following early appearances in Columbia, Missouri—including performances alongside the celebrated “Blind Tom”—Lange shaped Boone into a durable touring attraction, promoting him through clever publicity such as a widely advertised $1,000 challenge to anyone able to stump Boone’s musical memory. Touring extensively from the 1880s through the mid-1910s, Boone presented a wide-ranging repertoire bridging classical material, spirituals, popular melodies, and emerging ragtime idioms, helping define a transitional performance style between nineteenth-century virtuoso traditions and early American syncopated music.
Trade cards of this type served as practical promotional tools, combining portraiture with press quotations to establish credibility across regional circuits. Surviving examples associated with Boone’s tours appear less frequently than one might expect given his extensive travel schedule, and they offer useful documentation of early twentieth-century marketing practices and the professional networks supporting Black performers and managers. We find no copies in OCLC, and one copy in commerce, offered as part of the Steve Turner Collection at Cowans in December of 2020 (unsold, $800-1200 estimate).
