A Civil War-era carte de visite portrait of Henry Ward Beecher, the Brooklyn minister, abolitionist, and one of the most famous American clergymen of the nineteenth century. Beecher was pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn and a prominent antislavery speaker before and during the Civil War. His public reputation made him a natural subject for Brady and Anthony’s commercial portrait trade, which circulated images of political, military, literary, and religious figures in CDV format. Beecher’s wartime significance was tied especially to abolition and Union propaganda. He helped raise money for antislavery causes, supported the Union war effort, and in 1863 traveled to Britain to speak in favor of the Union cause at a moment when British public opinion and elite sympathy remained contested..
