A substantial 1970 directory of Black-owned and Black-managed businesses in Chicago, edited by Donald C. Walker and published by the W. Advertising Agency. The directory lists businesses, professionals, service providers, churches, clubs, restaurants, contractors, beauty shops, real estate offices, insurers, funeral homes, and other enterprises serving Chicago’s Black community. It also includes display advertisements and short biographical sketches of important figures in African American history. The directory belongs to the period of Black Power-era economic self-organization, when “buy Black” campaigns, neighborhood business directories, community newspapers, and local advertising networks sought to keep consumer dollars circulating within Black neighborhoods. The inside covers reproduce images of the “Wall of Respect” and “Wall of Truth,” linking the directory to the visual culture of Black Chicago in the years after the Wall of Respect became one of the defining public artworks of the Black Arts Movement. We find nine copies in OCLC.
