WANTED BY THE FBI / INTERSTATE FLIGHT - ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO COMMIT MURDER / LEROY ELDRIDGE CLEAVER.

Washington, D.C. Federal Bureau of Investigation, December 13, 1968. Four-page flyer measuring 10 ½ x 8 inches. Folded as issued with small chip at top left corner; excellent to Near Fine. Item #List3804

A 1968 FBI wanted flyer for Eldridge Cleaver, Minister of Information of the Black Panther Party and one of the most visible radical Black political figures of the late 1960s. Issued on December 13, 1968, the flyer sought Cleaver for “Interstate Flight – Assault with Intent to Commit Murder” after he failed to appear in connection with charges arising from the April 1968 Oakland shootout between Black Panthers and police. The flyer includes Cleaver’s photograph, aliases, physical description, identifying information, occupation, and the warning that he should be considered “armed and extremely dangerous.” Cleaver had become nationally known through his essays collected in Soul on Ice, published earlier in 1968, and through his role in the Black Panther Party. After the Oakland confrontation, in which Panther member Bobby Hutton was killed, Cleaver left the United States and spent years in exile, first in Cuba and then Algeria, before later returning to face the charges.
