1969 Press Photo of Student Protests at Southern University New Orleans Demanding a Black Studies Program.
United States: April 14, 1969. Photograph measuring 9 ¾ x 8 inches. With manuscript caption, date stamp, and later sticker verso. Staining across photograph; very good plus. Item #List3805
A photo of Southern University New Orleans students milling around the American flag on campus, with a small unidentified flag apparently affixed to the campus building in the background. The caption claims that the students are “removing” the US flag and raising a “black liberation flag,” though no one appears to be touching the US flag’s halyard. Newspaper reporting states that students had removed and replaced the flag a week prior; their flag had flown for less than ten minutes before police charged the group, replaced the flag, and maced the students, arresting 27 of them.[1] The students were demanding the institution of Black liberation and Black studies programs, and the removal of Dean of Students Emmett Bashful.
