New York City: ACME Newspictures, June 13, 1935. Photograph measuring 8 ¾ x 6 ⅝ inches. With caption, ACME and N.E.A. stamps, manuscript, and later sticker verso. Curled with a few wrinkles at bottom; very good plus. Item #List38124

A 1935 press photo showing an aerial view at night of the Wheeler Dam under construction. The dam was built between 1933 and 1935 as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The primary purpose of the dam was to improve navigation over a series of shoals on the Tennessee River, and it is also a hydroelectric facility. In 1961, its lock partly collapsed, requiring the TVA quickly to construct roads around the dam; this most famously rerouted the passage of the barge Palaemon, carrying parts of a Saturn I rocket from the Marshall Space Flight Center to Cape Canaveral.
