A photo of a pipe of the controversial Los Angeles Aqueduct identified as the “Grapevine siphon,” located about 50 miles north of Mojave, California. A number of people stand around the pipe, giving a sense of the 800-foot long, 9-foot wide pipe’s enormous scale. The photo’s caption states that a group of 16 workmen had been cleaning and repainting the pipe’s interior when one of the men slipped, knocking the group down the length of the pipe’s “inky blackness”. A hole had to be cut into the pipe to extract the men, some of whom were seriously injured.
