Press Photo of Japanese-American Soldiers of the 100th Infantry Battalion at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

United States: June 27, 1942. Photograph measuring 10 x 8 inches. With some editorial overpainting; two newspaper captions, manuscript, several date stamps, and later sticker verso. Worn especially at edges with some manuscript impressions showing through, slightly stained, with larger fold at bottom left of image; very good minus. Item #List3886

A press photo of soldiers from the 100th Infantry Battalion relaxing at a bar in La Crosse, Wisconsin, while on pass from Camp McCoy. The 100th, which would later join the famous 442nd Infantry Regiment, was composed almost entirely of Nisei soldiers from the Hawaii National Guard. The men are pictured seated at a table with a young woman, while a Hawaiian-themed band wearing leis plays in the background. Prior to the 100th’s arrival at Camp McCoy, it had been briefly used as a concentration camp for Japanese civilians from Hawai’i; it was later used to hold Japanese and German POWs.
