The Official Bulletin of the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee of Boston, Massachusetts. [August 1927 Issue]
Boston, Massachusetts: Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee, August 1927. Four-page newspaper measuring 9 x 12 inches. Folded in quarters, delicate with some tears at folds; toned with some large stains, not affecting legibility. Very good minus. Item #List3893 The August 1927 issue of the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee’s Official Bulletin. The Committee was founded by personal friend Aldino Felicani shortly after the pair’s 1920 arrest; the Committee’s Bulletin was published monthly between 1926 and 1927. This issue was published shortly after the advisory committee assembled by Governor Alvan T. Fuller—consisting of Harvard President Abbot Lowell, MIT President Samuel Stratton, and Judge Robert Grant—had upheld the verdict, and shortly before the pair was executed. It reviews critical discussion of Fuller’s decision by the Springfield Republican newspaper, and reproduces a column in the New York World by journalist Heywood Broun. It ends with the statement: “Sacco and Vanzetti die in the electric chair because honesty is not cherished even by President Lowell of Harvard. Sacco and Vanzetti are martyrs to truth. They are symbols for the workers of the world and for all men who sincerely seek to find the meaning of life. ‘God Save the Commonwealth of Massachusetts!’”
